Walrus Saveaway Conditions of Use

1.    Terms and Conditions of Use

1.1      These Terms and Conditions, which may be amended from time to time, replace all previous versions published by Merseytravel.

1.2      These Terms and Conditions will remain in effect until republished.

1.3      Your travel using the Walrus Saveaway is also subject to the bye-laws, regulations and conditions of each operator on whose vehicles, vessels or premises it is used.

2.     Your Purchase and the Walrus Card

2.1      Your Saveaway product will be added to your Walrus Card at the time of purchase.

2.2      It is your responsibility to ensure that the Saveaway you purchase covers your entire journey.  When you buy a Saveaway on a Walrus card you must check immediately that the receipt for your purchase covers all those areas.  For full details of areas please visit http://www.merseytravel.gov.uk/travelling-around/Pages/default.aspx

2.3      We cannot give refunds or change your Walrus Saveaway after you have bought it.

2.4      A Walrus card without a valid Saveaway on it, or with an expired Saveaway, is not valid for travel (unless it has another valid Walrus product on it).

2.5      A receipt on its own  is not valid for travel.  For travel on rail services keep your receipt with your Walrus card as it may be required for inspection.

2.6      You must not intentionally damage, alter or tamper with your Saveaway on a Walrus card in any way.

2.7      If your Walrus card has not been used for 12 months we reserve the right to de-activate the card thereby preventing Smartcard Saveaways (or other travel products) being added and travel made. If this happens you will need to obtain another Walrus card which may incur an activation fee.

2.8      Your Walrus card remains the property of Merseytravel.

3.     Date and Times

3.1      You can use a Walrus Saveaway at the following times:

-       anytime Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays and 

-       anytime Mondays to Fridays EXCEPT journeys scheduled to start between 6.31am and 9.29am.

3.2      You can only use a Walrus Saveaway on the specified date of travel chosen.  

4.     Travel

4.1      You can only use a Walrus Saveaway within the area(s) chosen for your journey.  If you make all or any part of a journey outside the valid area(s) of your Saveaway you must pay the appropriate fare for the extra part of the journey before the journey begins.

4.2      Each time you board a bus or pass through a rail or ferry terminal barrier it counts as a separate journey.

4.3      To use your Walrus Saveaway for travel place your Walrus card:

-       on the ticket machine on the bus;

-       present it at rail gates (where available) to open them (operator staff will be on hand to assist);

-       show it to staff within the Ferry terminal

4.4         Your Saveaway is valid for travel on:

-       most local bus and rail services in Merseyside It can also be used beyond the Merseyside boundary, by rail only, to Chester, Ellesmere Port and Ormskirk (you must have an All Area Saveaway to travel to stations outside Merseyside and travel should be via Merseyrail on the Wirral and/or Northern lines only);

-       the Mersey Ferries for a cross river service only, not a full cruise

4.5      A young persons’ Saveaway is only valid if you are 18 years of age or under.  We may need to see proof of your age.  Merseytravel and its approved retailers reserve the right to refuse purchase if acceptable proof of age is not produced at the point of sale. Merseytravel and its participating operators reserve the right to refuse travel if acceptable proof of age is not produced when requested by an authorised representative.

4.6      You must follow operators’ instructions when using your Walrus Saveaway to make a journey and you must let a member of staff examine your card at any time during your journey if they ask to do so.

4.7      Misuse may lead to your Walrus Saveaway being withdrawn and may lead to prosecution.

Paper Saveaway Conditions of Use

Can be used off-peak only at the following times:- Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays – anytime.  Mondays to Fridays – anytime EXCEPT journeys scheduled to start between 6:31 am and 9:29 am.

  • Each time you board a bus or pass through a rail or ferry terminal barrier counts as a separate journey.

  • Saveaways can be used on:

     - most local bus and rail services in Merseyside and beyond the Merseyside boundary, by rail only, to Chester,

     Ellesmere Port and Ormskirk (you must have an All Zones ticket to travel to stations outside Merseyside).

     - the Mersey Ferries.

  • Saveaways cannot be used on:

     - River Explorer Cruises. To enjoy the full, continuous River Explorer Cruise you can either buy a supplementary ticket for your Saveaway or Trio or you can buy a full River Explorer Cruise ticket from the terminal when collecting your boarding pass.

     - Coach excursions

     - Special bus services (eg night buses) and excursions

     - Merseylink

  • Tickets may only be used on the date and within the area shown on the ticket

  • Tickets are not transferable.  You may not pass your ticket on to another person once you have started using it.

  • Young persons’ tickets are only valid for use by persons under 18 years of age.  Proof of entitlement may be required.

  • Tickets cannot be sold on once they have been purchased from Merseytravel or any of its officially appointed agents.

  • Scratchcard tickets which have been dated incorrectly may be replaced provided the ticket is returned before the date marked to any Merseytravel Centre.  (Merseytravel Centres are at Birkenhead, Bootle, Huyton, Liverpool One, Queen Square and St Helens).

  • Other ticket sales outlets cannot exchange tickets which have been dated incorrectly under any circumstances.

  • Misuse may lead to prosecution.

  • Refunds not allowed.

The Saveaway Ticket Scheme is organised and operated by Merseytravel, PO Box 1976, Liverpool, L69 3HN.  Tickets remain the property of Merseytravel and are issued subject to the bye-laws, regulations and conditions of each undertaking on whose vehicles, vessels or premises they are used.

Walrus Solo Conditions of Use Solo Conditions of Use 

1.    Terms and Conditions of Use

1.3      Your travel using the Walrus Solo is also subject to the bye-laws, regulations and conditions of each operator on whose vehicles or premises it is used.

2.     Your Purchase and the Walrus Card

2.1      Your Solo product will be added to your Walrus Card at the time of purchase.

2.2      Within 6 months of purchase and before it has been activated, we will refund an unused 4-weekly Solo on production of the Walrus card together with the appropriate receipt.  To the extent a Solo has been part-used:

-       we cannot refund a weekly Solo

-       we will refund the unused part of a 4-weekly Solo pro-rata.

Each refund is subject to payment of an administration fee.

2.3      We cannot refund any lost or stolen Solo on a Walrus card.

2.4      A Walrus card without a valid Solo on it, or with an expired Smartcard Solo, is not valid for travel (unless it has another travel product on it).

2.5      A receipt on its own is not valid for travel.

4.2      Each time you board a bus it counts as a separate journey.

4.3      To use your Solo for travel place your Walrus card on the ticket machine on the bus.

4.4      Your Solo is valid for travel on most local bus services in Merseyside. Please refer to the Merseytravel website for a full list of participating operators and services.

Paper Trio, Solo or Railpass tickets

Conditions for using the tickets and information for people who apply

  • You can use a Solo ticket on most ordinary bus services (see note 1 below) in Merseyside.
  • You can use a Trio ticket on most ordinary bus and train services (see note 1 below) and the Mersey Ferries river crossings (see note 2 below) in the zones and areas you have bought the ticket for.
  • You can use a Railpass ticket on most ordinary train services in the zones and areas you have bought the ticket for.
  • Tickets are valid for journeys until midnight on the expiry date printed on the ticket.
  • Any information we provide on zones and areas is for guidance only. It is your responsibility to choose the zones and areas you want the ticket to cover.
  • If you make all or any part of a journey outside the zones and areas shown on your Trio, or Railpass ticket, you must pay the appropriate fare for the extra part of the journey before the journey begins.
  • Each time you board a bus or pass through a rail or ferry terminal barrier it counts as a separate journey.
  • A Trio, Solo or Railpass ticket can only be used by the person the ticket is issued to, and whose photograph is shown on the ticket.
  • The photograph you supply for your Trio, Solo or Railpass ticket must be an accurate likeness of your face. If your appearance changes in the future, you should get a replacement ticket, with an up-to-date photograph, to avoid the possibility of your ticket being judged not to be valid. If your name or address changes, you should also get a replacement ticket.
  • We have a refunds and allowances policy, but if your ticket is lost or stolen we do not have to issue a replacement.
  • We issue Trio, Solo and Railpass tickets in line with the bye-laws, regulations and conditions of each company on whose services the tickets are used (except in relation to refunds and allowances).
  • Any Trio, Solo or Railpass tickets we issue will continue to belong to us. You must not alter or interfere with your ticket in any way, as this is a criminal offence. Authorised staff have the right to withdraw a ticket if it has been misused in any way. If you misuse the ticket you could be prosecuted.

Note 1: The ticket is only valid on commercial buses, not private buses, night buses or coaches.
Note 2: The ticket is not valid on River Explorer or special cruises. To enjoy the full, continuous River Explorer Cruise you can either buy a supplementary ticket for your Saveaway or Trio or you can buy a full River Explorer Cruise ticket from the terminal when collecting your boarding pass.

Term Time Tickets

Conditions for using the tickets and information for people who apply
  • You can use a Solo Term Time Ticket on most ordinary bus services (see note 1 below) in Merseyside. They are valid Monday to Friday, during Term Time only and between the dates we set for each academic year. Term Time Tickets can only be used for journeys to or from school or for other educational purposes. Tickets are valid until midnight on the expiry date printed on the ticket.
  • You can use a Trio Term Time Ticket on most ordinary bus and train services (see note 1 below) and the Mersey Ferries river crossings (see note 2 below) in the zones and areas you have bought the ticket for. They are valid until 8pm, Monday to Friday, during Term Time only and between the dates we set for each academic year. Term Time Tickets can only be used for journeys to or from school or for other educational purposes. Tickets are valid for journeys until 8pm on the expiry date printed on the ticket.
  • You can use a Railpass Term Time Ticket on most ordinary train services in the zones and areas you have bought the ticket for. They are valid until 8pm, Monday to Friday, during Term Time only and between the dates we set for each academic year. Term Time Tickets can only be used for journeys to or from school or for other educational purposes. Tickets are valid for journeys until 8pm on the expiry date printed on the ticket.
  • You can only use a young person’s ticket if you are aged 5 to 18
  • If you become 18 during the term you can continue to buy young persons’ Term Time Tickets until the end of the academic year in which you turn 18.  From the end of the academic year in which you turn 18, you must buy an adult ticket.
  • Before you buy a Term Time Ticket you should check with your school, college or academy to make sure the dates which the ticket is valid for and the conditions of use are suitable for your journey before buying the ticket.
  • For an adult Term Time ticket, you must also have your school, college, university or training provider stamp the application form to confirm that you are in full time education, training or work-based learning.
  • Any information we provide on zones and areas is for guidance only.  It is your responsibility to choose the zones and areas you want the ticket to cover.
