Employment & skills in the transport sector
Good transport is essential for the quality of life and e
conomy of the Liverpool City Region. It provides for the efficient movement and access of people and goods across the area. To facilitate the growth in transport and to accommodate the expected increase in visitors to the region transport operators require the best resources available to provide this service. The employees for the transport sector must support, deliver and enhance the
service to patrons to allow this City Region to grow.
Working in partnership with employers, Job Centre Plus and learning providers, the LSTF Employment & Skills team at Merseytravel have developed training programmes to enable unemployed clients to gain skills to access transport sector jobs. Through our funding, businesses are able to employ local residents who are trained and qualified to national standards and to whatever the business requires.
By encouraging employers to change their recruitment style away from ‘word of mouth’ and employing staff simply for holding basic skills, the team have inspired a sector to recruit for attitude and train for skill. By selecting applicants based on communication skills, their ability to work with customers and for a positive attitude, employers have seen a change in their workforce.
It is the individuals themselves who also feel a sense of achievement, many engaging in learning and gaining qualification on their journey into employment. The LSTF team engage with each of the candidates and instil a sense of customer pride in their role and this is then carried forward as they start their employment.
Employers working on this project include Arriva, Stagecoach, Selwyns Travel, Huyton Travel Ltd, BikeRight! and Community Transport organisations.
By employing staff that have customer service at the heart of everything they do, the training providers have worked together with Merseytravel to provide vocational skills and qualifications, employers have staff that, despite being new to the sector can hit the ground running and provide a quality service to customers straight away.
In the first 20 months the project has delivered over 200 qualifications to job seekers, supporting applications for employment across the region. From the over 100 people have now secured full time sustainable employment within the transport sector.
The project intends to raise the profile of jobs and careers in the sector. By working in partnership across the City region and nationally with Sector Skills Council People 1st the team have provided information, advice and guidance to over 2000 people at school and college careers fairs, graduate development days.
