Merseytravel's Vision is
"A World Class integrated and sustainable transport system enabling a prosperous,
inclusive and growing Liverpool City Region."

We recognise that the sites we manage, the services we supply and the decisions of our staff have an effect on the environment. We are committed to making sure the environmental considerations are integrated into all of our work.

Our Environmental Policy sets-out our commitment and approach to managing our environmental impacts across our operations and making sure environmental considerations are at the heart of our organisational decision making.

The Environmental Strategy 2011-16 outlines how we aim to deliver our six environmental priorities, which are:

  • Minimising the Impact of Transport and Travel.
  • Reducing our Energy Use and Emissions.
  • Conserving Resources and Managing Pollution and Waste.
  • Environmentally Sustainable Infrastructure and Services.
  • Engagement with Partners and Stakeholders.
  • Environmental Performance and Monitoring.

The strategy supports the development of a range of actions to make sure we minimise our environmental impacts including sustainable procurement, waste and resource management, sustainable design and construction, energy and carbon reduction, and staff awareness and engagement.

Key projects and initiatives

Environmental Management System
Our operational environmental impacts are identified and managed through our Environmental Management System ISO 14001 (covers Merseytravel owned assets and delivered servces and operations only) which we have been independently certified to since 2003.

Cutting our Carbon Footprint
Our Carbon Management Plan aims to cut our carbon emissions by 7.2% by March 2016 based on 2009/10 emissions.

Annual Report
Each year we produce our annual Environmental Reportwhich summarises our progress in delivering the strategy and achieving our targets.

Low Emission Vehicles
We have experience of delivering projects focused on sustainable travel including electric, hybrid and biofuel vehicles.

Recharge is a project led by Merseytravel and part funded by Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV) which will provide a network of charging points at key locations across the Liverpool City Region and Cheshire West and Chester with the aim of creating a vibrant low carbon economy.

We have successfully bid to the Department for Transport's Clean Bus Technology Fund, the Green Bus Fund and the Local Sustainable Transport Fund for technology and projects to reduce the emissions of buses which operate in Air Quality Management Areas across the Liverpool City Region.

An EU project BIONIC, promoted the production and use of sustainably produced road biofuels; with bus company Stagecoach continuing to expand its use and reducing carbon emissions by up to 24%.

The Best Practice Guidelines for Sustainable Biofuels in the Community provides guidance for local authorities to establish and influence the use of sustainable biofuels within the transport sector.

Through our Supported Bus Services and Quality Partnership Schemes we encourage bus operators to use lower emission vehicles and employ operational good driver practices to address air quality and carbon emissions.
