Priority 2: Reducing our Energy Use and Emissions

Fitting solar panels on a roof

Carbon reduction and energy efficiency was a major focus of our work and was reinforced by our obligations under the Carbon Reduction Commitment.  Our six year Carbon Management Plan sets out our approach to reduce our carbon footprint.

This year carbon saving projects included:
  • Replacement of high mast lighting on Kingsway and Queensway Tunnel Approaches. Based on whole life cost analysis LED luminaires were chosen as the light source. This should lead to an annual cost saving of around £43,000 and a carbon reduction of 192 tonnes per annum.
  • Replacement of 75 conventional fluorescent light fittings in the Wallasey office with LED lights. The annual energy saving will be around 2 tonnes of carbon per annum.
  • At a garage workshop in the Asset Management complex at Wallasey Merseytravel vehicles are maintained and repaired. The lighting in this area was changed from metal halide fittings to LED lights. The main aim was to improve the lighting and reduce shadowing.  There will also be a carbon saving of around 0.75 tonnes per annum and cost saving of around £150 per annum.
  • At Kingsway tunnel a restrictive use policy on the ventilation fan system since October 2013, based on environmental conditions, has helped to reduce consumption.

Our overall carbon emissions were just over 9,800 tonnes, a decrease of 12.4% in comparison to the baseline year of 2009/10 . We have completed four years out of the six year plan.
