Uniquely in the UK, Merseytravel is the franchisee of the local rail network, Merseyrail. Merseytravel awarded the Merseyrail franchise to Serco/NedRail in 2004, since which time Merseyrail has consistently been one of the best performing train operating companies in the UK.
