 Consulting on Service Changes

Consulting on Service Changes

As part of the Liverpool City Region Bus Strategy, Merseytravel, working with bus operators, is carrying out a regular cycle of reviews of bus services, supported and commercial, in each district, with the aim of getting more people using the bus by creating a better bus experience.

A key part of those network reviews is the consultation process that helps develop the final network with valued input from stakeholders, bus users and the wider public.

While these reviews have looked at the all services across each district, there are occasions where operators may look to make changes to their commercial services on a route-by-route basis, as well as any changes to individual supported routes outside of the network review process.

As part of the Liverpool City Region Bus Alliance, Stagecoach and Arriva have recognised the value of consultation and have pledged to consult in advance on any significant changes to their commercial services, where possible.

In the Merseyside Region, operators have committed to limit changes to four key dates, where possible, throughout the year to stabilise the network and build confidence in bus services. In advance of these dates, consultation on any proposed changes will take place to help inform operators and Merseytravel of the potential impact they will have.

From January 2020 there will be changes to bus routes in Liverpool City Centre and where many people get on and off. The changes are in response to Liverpool City Council’s £47m City Centre Connectivity Scheme. It aims to transform the city centre, making it a cleaner, greener, more attractive place for everyone, where walking and cycling are more viable options to get around. This will be achieved by improving public realm and changing how traffic moves through the city, reducing congestion and improving air quality. You can find out more here. You can comment on the proposals until 2 August.

Stagecoach 80 & 82 services
Merseytravel are consulting on proposed changes to the 80 & 82 services in the West Kirby area.

Following recent consultation carried out by Stagecoach on their 22 route, the decision has been taken to revise the service to no longer serve Hoylake, Meols and Moreton, and also Arrowe Park Hospital. The revised route will operate from West Kirby via Irby and then on to Heswall and Chester. As a result of this change, there will be no bus service along Arrowe Brook Road, and it will become more difficult to access Arrowe Park Hospital from the north-western area of Wirral.

Merseytravel would like to give the public the opportunity to comment on two proposed options:

Option A – Service 80 will have a revised timetable but the route and frequency will remain the same. Service 82 will have a revised route and timetable, no longer serving Irby but extending to Arrowe Park Hospital via Arrowe Brook Road.

Option B – Service 80 will be reduced to operate every 2 hours but the route will remain the same. Service 81 will be introduced operating between West Kirby and Arrowe Park Hospital via Frankby Road & Arrowe Brook Road every hour. Service 82 will be revised to operate a circular route around Caldy every 2 hours.

While neither of these proposals offer a continued direct link to Arrowe Park Hospital from Meols and Hoylake, it does provide additional interchange options for those needing to travel to and from the hospital.

This consultation has now closed and the outcome will be published soon.

Arriva 61 (Bootle - Aigburth)
Arriva has consulted on a proposal to change service 61 which operates between Bootle and Aigburth Vale. The service is suffering with punctuality and reliability problems during the peak periods. After considering the feedback the service will change in both directions between 7:30am and 9:30am and 2:30pm and 6pm Monday to Friday to omit Prescot Road and Broad Green Road in the Old Swan area, and run the service via Queens Drive between East Prescot Road and the Rocket. These journeys would renumbered 61A. The change will be implemented on 1st September 2019.

The feedback received from the public and stakeholders has been considered by Arriva. Please see attached a detailed response to the comments that were received by the operator.

Arriva 38
Arriva has consulted on a proposal to change services 38 and 38B which run between St Helens and Rainford. The services run at a loss and are unsustainable in their current form.

After considering the feedback, Arriva have decided to go with the changes as planned. This means all journeys will operate via Kiln Lane and Bleak Hill Road on a half  hourly frequency, with each journey numbered as service 38. Rainford Road and St Helens Cemetery will no longer be served by service 38. Passengers will still be able to access this area using Merseytravel supported services 152.

The feedback received from the public and stakeholders has been considered. Please see a detailed response below.
