 Merseytravel Sector Based Work Academies

Are you interested in Transport Sector Careers?

There are many good jobs available in the Liverpool City Region working in transport, but they may not be jobs you’ve ever thought about.
Our roads and railways are full of people doing, interesting, challenging, rewarding jobs, moving people or goods from one place to another, and it’s an area where there are always vacancies.
At present there are opportunities to gain the training and licences to become a bus driver with real job vacancies attached to them through the Merseytravel SBWA programme as part of the wider Personalised Employment Pathways (PEP) project.

If you are interested please carry on reading.

What is SBWA?
SBWA is a “Sector-based Work Academy” run by Merseytravel, the passenger transport delivery arm of the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority.
We work with employers in the bus, rail, waterways, tourism and logistics sector, helping them recruit the right people into jobs such as bus driving, working on the railways, driving heavy goods vehicles, and many more.
So what’s the challenge?
Many jobs in transport require specialist skills or qualifications, and these can be very expensive.

Driving jobs, including buses, taxis, and HGVs all require the appropriate licenses or vocational qualifications, and some jobs, such as working on ships or rail tracks, require specialist health and safety certificates, and many people who aren’t working can’t afford to gain these to get into jobs.

A SBWA provides a way in which job seekers can gain these qualifications and employers can hire them, through a high quality training opportunity which is fully funded.

How does the Merseytravel Sector Based Work Academy (SBWA) work?
We have strong links with employers in the sector, and we know out what jobs are available and what skills and qualifications are required.

We then work with Job Centre Plus and other agencies to identify people who want to work in these industries, and if they have the right attitude and aptitude, we can enrol them on the course.
This is delivered by specialist transport training providers, and by knowing the needs of the employers we can give people exactly the right qualifications to meet their recruitment needs, leading to over 200 jobs in the last 3 years.

There’s no guarantee of a job, and some of the challenges, such as driving tests, can require hard work and dedication, but our team will support you every step of the way. Our success rate is extremely high and we have helped hundreds of people into good jobs.
Merseytravel and our partners want to see people with excellent skills working in the transport sector, delivering high quality services which will support the growth of our Region, and the SBWA programme is supporting this ambition.

We currently have opportunities on our SBWA programme to become Trainee Bus Drivers with a guaranteed job interview on completion of training. All programmes have guaranteed Jobs for everyone who completes the training and is successful at the interview stage.
