Queensway Lighting Upgrade

The Queensway (Birkenhead) tunnel is set benefit from a comprehensive lighting upgrade to save on energy costs and reduce its carbon footprint.

June will see the start of an £11m project to upgrade a range of major electrical equipment, including replacing the current lighting with an energy efficient LED system.

This means that from Monday 5 June 2023, the Queensway Tunnel will remain open during the day but will close every night between 21:00 hours and 06:30 hours to enable the works to take place.

The closures will be over 7 days a week and are expected to last over a prolonged period of time to allow this investment in the Tunnel.

Cross river bus services will be diverted and so passengers are advised to check directly with their operator for any changes to their journey and to plan ahead.

Cyclists looking to use the Queensway Tunnel during the planned night time closures can still do however, this is under a Police escort only.

They can report to the Police Information points at either end of the Tunnel, Old Haymarket or Kings Square, and call the Police Help Point or call 0300 3000 999.   Mersey Tunnels Police will arrange safe passage through the Tunnel during the closure for essential travel i.e. travel to and from work and entry may be refused at certain times for safety reasons.

Cyclists must not enter the Tunnel without the Police escort for safety management reasons.
