Planned changes to bus services

Rethink Travel - how you can help

The health and safety of both customers and staff is a number one priority for Merseytravel. That’s why we are continuing to follow national Government advice and we’re working closely with rail, bus and other transport operators to provide services as safely as possible. If you're using public transport then we're asking you to follow our important journey planning advice including plan ahead and pay by contactless if you can. Face coverings are mandatory on public transport and at all enclosed areas of transport hubs including all rail stations, ferry terminals and Merseytravel Centres. You can read the Government information and check out our Face Covering FAQs to find out more including how to make your own face coverings at home and whether you are exempt due to a medical condition.   

Bus services will continue to run to revised timetables. Please follow this specific advice when using the bus as well as maintaining social distancing

  • Allow passengers to get off before boarding
  • Wear a face covering
  • Sit by the window and leave a row free either side
  • Seats within 2m of the driver are not in use - please give the driver space
  • Pay by contactless card or apple/android pay on all bus service

There may be an occasion when a bus is full due to social distancing requirements and this will be displayed on the front of the bus.


School Services

The way we use public transport has changed during the Coronavirus pandemic.

So, if you’re getting ready to go back to school, college, university or are a parent, we’ve got some important information and advice to help get you there and back and keep everyone safe.

You are encouraged to walk and cycle if you can, especially if you live within a mile or two of your school, leaving public transport available for those who live a little further away.

Buses and trains are running to get you to and from school, but capacity may be reduced due to social distancing.  As it is difficult to predict demand across every service, please check directly with rail and bus operators for the latest service information as things may change on a regular basis.

Arrangements for different schools, colleges and universities will vary, so it is vital that you check directly with your own school or college to understand any local arrangements being put in place.

There are no planned engineering works this week.

On Monday 7 September timetable changes were made with additional services reinstated across the network. Please remember to wear a face covering on trains and in stations unless you are under 11 or exempt. A £100 fine applies. Hightown Bridge Refurbishment

7 September - 2 October

Due to bridge refurbishment work, from Monday 7 September until Friday 2 October, there will be no ramped access to the footbridge at Hightown station.

Passengers requiring step free access are advised to use Hall Road or Formby station.

If you normally use our assisted travel service please contact our customer relations team so we can arrange to get you where you need to be.

You can request assistance by telephoning 0800 0277 347 (Freephone) or 0151 555 1111 from 07:00 to 19:00 Monday to Friday.
