Mobility Permit Scheme

We realise that some customers with restricted mobility who use mobility scooters may still want to use public transport.

Merseytravel is working hard to make it easier for mobility scooter users to use our bus network as safely as possible. Therefore, we have introduced the Mobility Permit scheme, which allows certain types of scooters on our buses.

Eligibility Criteria

If your scooter meets the following dimensions, you can apply for a Mobility Permit. This will show that your scooter meets our requirements and is safe to travel with us:

Only Class 2 mobility scooters are permitted on Metro buses. Scooters must meet the following specifications:

  • Maximum width: 600mm (60cm)
  • Maximum length: 1000mm (100cm)
  • Turning radius: 1200mm (120cm) or less
  • Combined weight (scooter + user): 300kg or less

Please consult your user manual if you are not sure of your scooter’s dimensions.

Permit Application Process

To travel with a mobility scooter on a bus, you must apply for a Mobility Scooter Permit. The application process includes:

  • Submitting an application via the LCRCA website
  • Undergoing an assessment of the scooter, which will be conducted by a designated MerseyLink driver
  • Receiving a photographic permit card valid for 5 year

Safe Travel Guidelines

When travelling with your mobility scooter:

  • Board the bus head-on and park in the designated wheelchair space
  • Remain seated on the scooter during the journey
  • Ensure your scooter is in good working condition and not overloaded
  • Show your permit to the driver when boarding

Additional Information

Wheelchair users have priority over scooter users for the designated space. Drivers may refuse boarding if safety is compromised or if the bus is too full.
