The new railway station at Headbolt Lane in Kirkby has been delivered by the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority in partnership with Knowsley Council, Network Rail, Merseyrail and Northern. Funding for the scheme has come from the DfT Transforming Cities Fund.

The new station includes:

  • Step-free access throughout the station
  • A bus interchange
  • Cycle parking
  • Links to local cycling and walking networks
  • Passenger waiting facilities and toilets
  • 300 park and ride spaces (following the station opening works will be continuing to complete the main car park and the installation of electric vehicle charging points)

The station is the new terminus for both Merseyrail and Northern services, extending the Merseyrail network beyond the existing Kirkby station and providing improved transport links for the Northwood and Tower Hill areas into Liverpool city centre. Northern services from Wigan and Manchester will also operate to and from the new three-platform station.

It is the start of Mayor Rotheram’s pledge of “Merseyrail for All”, a commitment to expanding the local rail network across the city region.

The station is the first to benefit from battery technology on the new trains for the Merseyrail network, removing the need to extend the third rail beyond the existing Kirkby station. That technology could enable the Merseyrail network in the future to run to places previously inaccessible, including as far as Wrexham, Warrington, Preston and Runcorn.

The station will provide a direct interchange to Skelmersdale via the Stagecoach Express bus service 319, which is funded by Lancashire County Council.

The new station is a key part of Mayor Steve Rotheram’s plans to deliver a London-style integrated transport system for the City Region, which aims to bring together bus, rail, ferry and active travel in one simple, affordable and easy to use transport network.

It is also aligned to Knowsley Council’s plans to improve transport access in the area for residents whilst also supporting workers and visitors to one of Europe’s largest employment sites – Knowsley Business Park.
