Planned changes to rail services
City and Other Lines:
Monday 27 July to Friday 31 July 2026
Engineering work is taking place between Gathurst and Southport, closing all lines. Background information on the work can be found below.
- Trains between Manchester stations and Southport will start/terminate at Wigan Wallgate or Wigan North Western. Buses will operate between Wigan Wallgate and Southport.
Background information:
Network Rail will be replacing ageing track near Parbold. This vital engineering work involves teams replacing sections of track, as well as sleepers and ballast, as the current track is nearing the end of its life. Once completed, this will lead to better ride quality and a reduction in delays and speed restrictions in the area.

Engineering work is taking place between Southport and Gathurst, closing some lines.
- The 06:03 Southport to Manchester Oxford Road service will start from Wigan Wallgate at 06:37. If you are travelling between Southport and Wigan Wallgate, you are advised to travel on the next available service.
